Speaking of religious places, there was one I'd visited in Hong Kong that I thought I should write a post about.
Located in Lantau Island, there lies on the mountain a large bronze statue of Tian Tan Buddha, aka The Big Buddha. It's a major centre of Buddhism in Hong Kong and is also a popular tourist attraction. Being the largest Buddha statue in the world, it stands at 34 meters high and weighs 250 tonnes.
To get closer to the statue, one must go up a steep stairway of 260 steps. If you remember from my previous post, I mentioned that I was unfit (in subtext). So climbing these stairs was a major workout! I would've rested somewhere in the middle but I didn't want to fall behind from my family so I kept going. By the time I reached the top I was so out of breathe I thought I was going to die!
MWAHAHAHA I MADE IT TO THE TOP
Of course the reward for not giving up on the stairway is being able to see the big statue up close and admire the panoramic view of Lantau Island's beauty.
On the very left is the Po Lin Monastery in renovation
One thing I must note is the weather. Because it was winter when I went there, it was FREEZING!!! Especially at the very top of the mountain! It was cloudy, hardly ever sunny and it was really windy! It was a huge mistake on my part for wearing only two layers of clothing. But despite that I even dared to eat ice-cream. My family thought I was crazy.
Anyway, that concludes my crazy trip to the Big Buddha statue.
Until next time.
Angela out!
